Privacy policy
Can I Cast It? is built so that there is almost nothing to write here. The app has no accounts, no analytics and no advertising. What you record stays on your phone.
The short version. We do not collect, receive or store any personal data about you. There is no sign-up, no email address, no tracking, and no server holding your notes. Everything the app saves is written to storage on your own device, and deleting the app deletes it. The one exception is subscriptions: to sell and check Pro, the app talks to Apple and to RevenueCat using an anonymous ID, as described below.
Who this covers
This policy covers the Can I Cast It? iPhone app, available on the App Store, and this website.
What the app stores on your device
The following is saved locally so the app works without a connection. None of it is transmitted to us or to anyone else.
- An anonymous local profile. On first launch the app generates a random identifier and a display handle such as “Angler #6755”. It is not linked to your name, email address, phone or any account, and it never leaves the device.
- Saved and private spots. Venues you favourite, and any pins you create yourself, including their coordinates and any notes or photo you attach.
- Bankside notes. Text, tactics, water conditions, an optional self-assessed success rating, and any photos you choose to attach.
- Licence wallet entries. If you choose to record them: your rod licence number, the name on the licence, an optional Environment Agency customer identification number, expiry date and amount paid. These fields exist so you can produce them on the bank. They are stored on the device and are never sent anywhere.
- App preferences and a local error log. Whether you have seen onboarding, a schema version, and a rolling log of recent errors kept for local debugging.
This data is held in the app's private storage area on your device. It is not encrypted by the app beyond the protection your phone's own operating system and device passcode provide. If you record a licence number, treat it with the same care you would the paper copy.
What we do not do
- We do not operate an account system, and there is nothing to log into.
- We do not use analytics, telemetry, crash reporting or attribution software. No such library is installed in the app.
- We do not use an advertising network. The tackle-shop card shown on some venues to non-subscribers is drawn from the shop list bundled inside the app; no third party is contacted to serve it and no data about you is shared.
- We do not track you across other apps or websites.
- We do not sell, rent or share personal data, because we do not hold any.
- We do not upload your notes, spots, photos or licence details.
The app contains a synchronisation layer that is deliberately switched off and points at no real server. If cloud sync is built in future, this policy will be updated before it is turned on, and it will be something you opt into.
Location
With your permission the app reads your location while you are using it, for two things: centring the map on water near you, and stamping a coordinate on a private spot when you ask it to. The app requests foreground (“while using the app”) access only, never background tracking. Your position is used on the device and is not transmitted. You can refuse or withdraw the permission in your phone's settings; the map still works, you simply have to pan to where you are going.
Camera and photos
If you attach a photo to a note or a private spot, the app asks for camera or photo-library access at that moment. The image is referenced from your device's own storage and is never uploaded.
Maps
The venue data, access rules and canal lines are bundled inside the app. The map imagery underneath them is provided by Apple Maps on iOS and Google Maps on Android, which means that when you pan the map your device requests map tiles from Apple or Google. Those requests are handled by the operating system under Apple's and Google's own privacy terms, and we neither see nor receive them.
Subscriptions
Pro subscriptions are sold through the App Store. Apple takes the payment; we never see your card or Apple Account details. Subscription status is managed through RevenueCat, a payment-infrastructure provider. To show the plans and check whether you have Pro, the app sends RevenueCat an anonymous identifier that RevenueCat generates itself, along with your purchase and subscription history and the basic technical details its SDK needs (such as app version, platform and store country). That identifier is not tied to your name or email address, and we do not combine it with anything else — the app has no account to combine it with. Apple's handling of your purchase is covered by Apple's privacy policy.
This website
This site sets no cookies, runs no analytics and loads no third-party scripts or fonts. Fonts and images are served from the same domain, with one exception: the demo film. Its preview image is loaded from YouTube (i.ytimg.com), and the YouTube player itself is only loaded — from youtube-nocookie.com, YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode — if you press play. From that point YouTube's own privacy policy applies to the player. Our hosting provider keeps standard server logs, which may include your IP address, for security and reliability purposes.
Children
The app is not directed at children and does not collect personal data from anyone. Anglers under 13 in England and Wales do not need a rod licence, and younger anglers should fish with an adult.
Your rights
UK GDPR gives you rights over personal data held about you — access, correction, erasure, portability and objection. Because we hold no personal data about you, there is nothing for us to retrieve, correct or delete. Subscription records are held by Apple and RevenueCat against an anonymous identifier; email us if you want help with a request about them. Your own copy is under your control: individual notes and spots can be deleted in the app, and uninstalling the app removes all of it from your device. Deleted data cannot be recovered by us, because we never had it.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top will change with it. Material changes — in particular anything that involves data leaving your device — will be described in the app before they take effect.
